Talking kitsune and other Asian fox spirits, I recall that many of them could also be frightened off by things like the sound of gunshots, the barking of dogs, and any other sounds associated with a fox hunt. Except for the vicious Korean kumiho, who don't seem to have feared anything or anyone. If you were dealing with one of them you were out of luck.

Now that makes sense and doesn't even have to get into anything but the fox-form. I think one hunt would be enough to make you shy off them for life.
