On the third hand, that was a logical accident. If they had obtained it in trade, or received it from the king, or killed a dragon, the funeral rites would have been the same.

Actually, the biggest amount of buried pirate gold is on the island Gotland, in the Baltic Sea. That was because Vikings would settle down and, like everyone else, bury their treasure as the most secure way to keep it.
